INTERNATIONAL OPEN CALL
ART MAKER ISSUE 4: IN NATURE
JURIED BY SOFIA CRISTINA JIMENEZ

IN NATURE is an open call for work that engages with the natural world—its rhythms, forces, and quiet transformations. We invite you to share art that reflects on our connection to the environment, whether that experience feels intimate or expansive, observational or symbolic, grounded or imagined.
The theme is intentionally broad. We are interested in your unique perspective on the world, whether through direct representation, emotional resonance, storytelling, or experimental processes. Your work might explore growth, decay, migration, instinct, memory, scale, or the tension between the human and nonhuman. From traditional landscapes and wildlife studies to conceptual installations and digital forms, we want to see how you engage with the natural world.
We welcome all mediums, including painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, textiles, collage, printmaking, video, animation, sound, installation, and experimental work. We want to see how your unique creative practice interprets our shared environment.
New works created in response to this call are welcome, as well as corresponding works made within the last three years.*
*Please note: Works created solely with AI are not eligible for this call. Questions? Email us at info@artmakermag.com.

Sofía Cristina Jiménez is a Madrid-based visual artist and the creator of El Espacio Permanente. After more than a decade working in the luxury fashion industry, she transitioned entirely to her studio practice in 2019, where painting became her most direct way of being in the world. She regularly exhibits in galleries and museums in Europe and has shown her work in art fairs including Art Madrid and JustMad. Her paintings are held in permanent collections, including Royal Caribbean's art collection and the Museo Cromática in Toledo, Spain. Recent recognition includes awards and selections in international competitions in Spain, China, and the United Kingdom, including the Premio Ayuntamiento de Miguelturra at the Certamen Carta Puebla 2025.
Centered on the natural world, Sofía Cristina Jiménez’s practice investigates the intersection of human, animal, and artificial spheres, capturing the nuanced emotions that arise from these complex encounters. Her paintings construct a parallel visual system in which nature is neither decorative nor scenic, but the subject itself. The work engages with contemporary concerns such as environmental impact, our growing distance from the natural world, and the visual saturation of daily life, but refuses direct confrontation. Instead, it uses tenderness as a working method, aiming not to shock the viewer, but to shift something internal.
